LED LIGHTING

A LED light is a type of solid state lighting (SSL), built up from a series of LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The characteristics of the LEDs used together in the lamp determine the lighting angle, the flow of light, the strength of the light and the colour reproduction.

LIFESPAN
In theory LED lamps can illuminate for more than 50,000 hours (depending on the brand, a normal bulb burns for an average of 1,000 hours, a low-energy bulb between 5,000 and 10,000 hours and a fluorescent lamp between 5,000 and 7,000 hours). In practice an LED lamp will last between 20,000 and 40,000 hours. Deterioration in light output over the entire lifespan is less than 30%. An LED lamp barely becomes warm, and is vibration- and shock-resistant. An LED lamp can cope with being switched on and off rapidly. Until recently LED lamps could not be dimmed, but the first dimmable models are now also available from sdb.

ENERGY USAGE
The current LED lamp converts around 50% of its consumed energy into light. For a fluorescent lamp (energy-saver or strip-light) the figure is around 35%, and for a normal bulb 10%. The rest is lost into the environment as heat. Thanks to the low costs and long lifespan, in the near future LED lamps will supersede many of the other lamp types. In 2010 LED lamps can replace the lighter types of halogen lamps, incandescent bulbs and strip-lights without any loss of light output and light colour. In the years ahead heavier types of lamps will also be able to be replaced by LED lamps.
